Frames from Coach Cole's demo in the Corebound videos.
Setup
Push the bench against a wall so it cannot slide. Stand facing it, holding the dumbbells at your sides or with your hands free for balance.
Step by step
- Whole foot on the bench, bench against a wall.
- Drive through the top heel, don't push off the back foot.
- Step down slowly with control.
Cole's tip
Let the top leg do the work. If you bounce off the bottom foot, the bench is too high or the dumbbells are too heavy.
Common mistakes
- Pushing off the bottom leg.
- Knee caving in.
- Stepping onto the bench edge.
Make it easier or harder
Easier option
Bodyweight, or a lower step (stairs).
Harder option
Hold dumbbells, slow 3-second step down.
Variations in the programs
Step-Up
In Calisthenics
- Whole foot on the bench
- Drive up with the top leg
- Step down with control
Easier: Use a lower step · Harder: Slow 3-second step-down
Step-Up (Slow Lower)
In Calisthenics
- Whole foot on the bench
- Drive up with the top leg
- Take three seconds to step down
Easier: Regular-speed step-up · Harder: Hold dumbbells at your sides
Safety
- Push the bench against a wall and step onto the middle of it, never the end or edge.
- Skip step-ups if the bench wobbles or is taller than your knee; use a stair instead.
- Stop if you feel sharp or joint pain, numbness or tingling, chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness. Effort and muscle burn are normal; pain is not.
